IUD Q & A

What is an IUD?

An IUD is a small birth control device that Dr. Abdullah inserts into your uterus. IUDs are made of plastic and shaped like a T. They’re available in hormonal and non-hormonal forms.

The non-hormonal IUD (ParaGard) is wrapped with copper and protects against pregnancy for up to 10 years. The copper in the non-hormonal IUD prevents the sperm from joining your egg.

Hormonal IUD options (Mirena, Skyla, Liletta, and Kyleena) contain progestin and prevent pregnancy for between three and five years, depending on the brand. The hormonal IUDs make your cervical mucus thicker, which prevents sperm from reaching your egg. Some of the hormonal options also stop ovulation.

What is a birth control implant?

The birth control implant, known by its brand name Nexplanon, is a device the size and shape of a match that is implanted in the underside of your upper arm. It slowly releases etonogestrel for up to three years to prevent ovulation. It also thickens your cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach your uterus.

What are the benefits of IUDs and implants?

There are a number of benefits to choosing an IUD or a birth control implant.

  • No need to remember to take a pill every day
  • Last for 3-10 years
  • Highly effective
  • Fertility is restored when device is removed
  • Can lead to lighter periods

Are other forms of birth control available?

Yes, Dr. Abdullah also prescribes birth control pills and offers advice on other options like birth control shots, condoms, diaphragms, and fertility monitoring. He helps women make the best choice about birth control for their personal needs.

How do I know what type of birth control is right for me?

Dr. Abdullah offers birth control consultations and exams to help determine the best birth control option for you. Birth control is a very personal choice and each woman has different needs. Some of the factors that you should consider include:

  • Convenience — do you want a birth control option that you don’t have to think about?
  • Future plans for a family — some forms of birth control are immediately reversible while others take time for your body to become fertile again.
  • Effectiveness — how much risk are you comfortable with?
  • Additional protection — do you need to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases as well as pregnancy?
